m-paoword replied to your post: I think Naruto is one of the most overrated series out there. It hasn’t brought anything new to the shounen genre, is overhyped, and is full of flaws. The characters are a bastardized recreation of ninjutsu and the characterization leaves much to be desired. The art is subpar for a shounen series and the battles are boring and the plot predictable.
Or it’s under performing by comparison to One Piece because it isn’t as good as One Piece and that you are allowing your pro-Naruto agenda to cloud and distort your viewpoint of the series thereby causing you to fail to see how over hyped it is.
I’m possibly the farthest one can ever be from having a pro-Naruto agenda. In fact, if the series, were truly flawed, then I would indicate it as such. If I had such an agenda why would I bother following One Piece weekly, or putting Zoro, Luffy, Ace, and Sanji as some of the best characters ever realized in shonen manga on the hype list. Naruto has been hitting it’s stride ever since it premiered and the masses just seem to fail to acknowledge the series greatness.
If One Piece focused on developing friendship and bonds more, showing action with key fights on panel versus off panel, keeping the straw hats together during arcs rather than splitting them up the second it begins, becoming more suspenseful, decreasing the amount of world building and text heavy chapters, having better character designs (why does everyone have to be a big bulky giant or non human creature?, and virtually most antagonists of the same species in the series have similar features), eliminate non human non compelling straw hats to decrease the cast size and give more attention to the characters we care about, brought Sabo back, eliminated Luffy’s scar, and had faster pacing, then I think One Piece would rival and be as good as and if not better than Naruto and Fairy Tail.

Cool story, bro.
:D
Why do you have to make thing so hard?
Jesus christ, I wrote my little blurb for the Spring 2012 summary thread, and it was looking pretty normal, like Anthony, Alex, and Ian all wrote what I consider our normal length, but then like
Some people wrote more in their summary than I do in an average episode review
and I’m like
DUDE THE SUGGESTED LENGTH WAS LIKE ONE PARAGRAPH WTF
Well to be fair, there was no actual suggested length, just a minimum length. :)
Because you know, that jerk thief Toriyama time-traveled to the future and stole some of Oda’s character ideas.
And it’s not like Oda hasn’t riddled references to Toriyama through his work.
Toriyama ought to have designed his characters better in a way that couldnt be easily improved upon and serve as an easy inspiration for others. Surely you all could agree that he could aimed for a higher state of originality.
He used archetypes, so it’s not that someone took the characters that he created and moved forth with them, it’s that other writers have used the same archetypes but have done it, in your own opinion, better than Toriyama did.
He also kind of ushered in the era of fight manga, so he created what’s essentially the base of everything that gets done in the series that came out thereafter. At this point it’s inevitable that parallels will be drawn, and there will always be people trying harder to do it better, and many of them will succeed.
Sounds like a certain mangaka was an inspiration to other mangaka after all.
